“Smile and the world smiles with you.” We’ve all heard that before. And, it makes sense. When someone smiles at us, their smile prompts us to smile back.
Smiling has a tendency to create happy feelings that are “real” feelings. This has been proven through scientific studies on the brain. Apparently, the act of smiling causes a reaction in our brains that triggers the release of endorphins. These are chemicals in the brain that give us a “natural high” of sorts.
And, studies have also shown that these chemicals are released even when faking a smile. Apparently, we are able to boost our mood by smiling, whether we feel like smiling or not!
Your smile is front and center, so it also has an impact on facial appearance. The mere act of smiling can also make you look younger than your actual years. Smiling lifts facial muscles upward, providing a mini-face lift.
While a beautiful smile can enhance facial appearance, one that shows crooked, misshaped or stained teeth; decay; or a ‘gummy smile’ not only detracts from facial appearance, it can negatively impact self-esteem and self-confidence.
When you feel good about the appearance of your smile, smiling simply comes easier. As a Demotte dentist who has advanced training and skills in cosmetic dentistry, I’ve seen patients who have struggled with a flawed or decayed smile.
Because most of us weren’t born with a beautiful smile, I’ve devoted many continuing education hours and completion of numerous courses to stay on the cutting edge of modern methods to enhance a smile’s appearance.
No one has to live with a smile that makes them feel awkward. With today’s cosmetic dentistry, the latest techniques and dental materials offer exceptional options to recreate a flattering smile you’ll love to share – often in just one or two visits! Smile enhancement options include:
Porcelain Crowns & Veneers – Porcelain gives the highest degree of luminosity and longevity available in dentistry. Porcelain crowns and veneers can beautifully recreate a smile for the most natural look and feel possible. Plus, porcelain’s durability is also exceptional to any other material used in cosmetic dentistry. Our CEREC 3D technology can create beautiful, natural-looking crowns while you wait.
Bonding – Chipped, uneven, gapped, discolored or poorly-shaped teeth may be greatly improved with the application of bonding. Bonding is a material painted over tooth surfaces and can correct some smile flaws. While not as durable or stain-resistant as porcelain, bonding has good longevity for an affordable cost. It can also be shade-matched to blend attractively with other teeth with the procedure taking just one visit.
Dental Implants – When missing one or more natural teeth, Dental Implants are recommended to restore the ability to bite and chew foods comfortably and speak and laugh with confidence. This is because Dental Implants are supported by the jaw, just as natural tooth roots, which provides the same, sturdy foundation as natural teeth. In addition to a natural function, the replacement teeth are custom-designed to provide an attractive smile with natural appeal.
Invisalign Realignment System – When teeth are crowded, crooked, or tilted out of proper alignment, it can mar the appearance of a smile as well as lead to bite problems. When the bite is misaligned, it can transfer stress and strain to the TMJ, or jaw joints. This can cause frequent headaches, migraines, sore jaw joints, difficulty opening the mouth fully, dizziness and ear ringing. Sufferers may also experience night-time teeth grinding and/or clenching, which can lead to broken, fractured, and worn teeth. An appealing option to straighten teeth is Invisalign. This uses clear aligners that fit ‘invisably’ over teeth. The aligners gently guide the teeth into position without prickly wires or brackets.
Gum Reshaping – When too much gum tissue is visible above the teeth most visible in a smile, it’s known as a “gummy smile.” A smile may also look “jumbled” when there are varying levels of gum tissue that arches over each tooth. To correct these smile detractors, we perform a gingivectomy, which evens out the line of tissues for natural-looking contours.
Teeth Whitening Systems – The whitening kits sold OTC only lighten the shade of natural teeth minimally. And, the whitening tends to last so temporarily that you need repeats often. When most people actually calculate the expenses for repeated touch-ups, they realize they could have treated themselves to a whitening treatment in our office. We use a dentist-level whitening that provides a much higher degree of whitening. At an affordable rate, the results also last for a long time. The Lumibrite Whitening system is a gentle, safe and effective professional in-office option. Lumibrite produces whitening results in as little as 30 minutes of treatment time. Lumibrite uses the combination of a desensitizer and patented whitening gel to reduce the chairtime required for effective treatment. Also, with fluoride as an added benefit, teeth are more protected from cavities.
